Irvine Unified School District receives $2 million for arts, music, science

A generous contribution of $2 million was received on Tuesday from the Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation, marking a significant milestone in their $50-million, 20-year commitment. This donation will continue to fortify the arts, music, and science programs in elementary schools within the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD), as confirmed by officials.

Jeff Davis, Senior Vice President of the Irvine Co., emphasized the enduring dedication to educational excellence in Irvine, stating, “Educational opportunity and excellence have always been at the heart of our planning efforts in Irvine." He further elaborated on the commitment made through the Excellence in Education Enrichment program, which strengthens the longstanding partnership with IUSD, students, and families to enhance enrichment programs in science, art, and music.

The allocated funds will support two one-hour science lessons, two 40-minute music lessons per week, and six one-hour art classes annually for students in grades 4 through 6. Nearly 200,000 elementary students have already benefited from these resources, as estimated by the district.

Notably, student works have been showcased at prominent art events such as the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts and the Orange County Imagination Celebration. Additionally, over 300 projects were submitted to the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair this year.

The presentation of a symbolic check took place at the 40th annual Donald Bren Honors Concert at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, involving more than 600 participating students. Cyril Yu, President of the IUSD Board of Education, emphasized the significance of this funding, highlighting its role in bridging a crucial gap. While middle and high schools in the district boast robust programs, elementary schools face budgetary constraints impacting their ability to provide comprehensive education in these vital fields.

Yu stressed the importance of early exposure to scientific concepts, experiments, arts, and music, underscoring their role in fostering interest and diversity in STEM fields. He emphasized that these foundational skills are equally essential for students' overall development and future career prospects.
